The Flash Technique was developed in 2017 by Phil Manfield as a strategy in EMDR therapy to rapidly reduce distress in traumatic memories prior to processing them in EMDR therapy. It has since been developed into a strategy to fully and adaptively process difficult memories as an independent approach to memory resolution, especially with clients with complex trauma. This training explores Flash in the context of memory reconsolidation research of the past 25 years. The growing body of research that supports these approaches as a safe and effective means of memory resolution are reviewed.
Many existing trauma therapies require extensive and expensive training to do safely and effectively. These approaches to therapy are often difficult with clients who have the most extreme trauma as they often require that clients have a substantial window of tolerance, have some fund of adaptive information or insight, and are generally stable enough for the intensity that the approach demands. Flash approaches help clients process difficult memories tiny pieces at a time and ground the client in a positive experience throughout the session. Flash approaches are associated with a much lower risk of client decompensation than most other approaches, yet most traumatic target memories fully and permanently resolve in a single session (requiring no subsequent intervention using other approaches).
This training teaches the Four Blinks Version of Flash conceptualization. Participants are introduced to the six core steps of this approach, taught the four core resources, instructed how to conduct individual session, taught how to identify when problems emerge, and taught how to effectively intervene when clients encounter difficulties. Once all core components are taught, participants will engage in a group Flash session led by the trainer for about 30 minutes where each participant will use this approach to try to resolve a difficult memory.
Participants will also be instructed in the protocol for group Flash, including Flash as a group crisis intervention protocol for war violence, community violence, or trauma experienced by a small group. In the final practicum, participants will be able to practice Flash in one-on-one sessions, groups sessions, or individual sessions. If desired, participants can actively observe all practicums and not engage in direct processing of their own trauma if that feels safer for them.
Important Note: For the experiential parts of this training it is very helpful (but not essential) if you bring a fully-charged smart phone, tablet, or other video-capable device with headphones.
